10 Years of Research Achievement of the NEES-UC San Diego Shaking Table
In this presentation, Prof. Jose Restrepo will highlight the 10 years of research achievement of the NEES-UC San Diego Shaking Table. Numerous landmark research projects have been carried out on the shaking table, resulting in discovering of new knowledge and advancement of design codes. In particular, Prof. Restrepo will highlight the research project on thin structural walls, and will contrast its main findings with observations made in the M8.8 Chile earthquake. He will also show the research project on precast concrete diaphragms and will briefly discuss the main changes to ASCE 7 that this research work brought up. Furhtermore, Prof. Restrepo will highlight the main findings of the research project on a fully equipped 5-story building, which was tested with base-isolation and then and then in a fixed-based condition. Prof. Restrepo will end its presentation with a brief discussion of a building project whose design aims at reducing floor inertia forces. This building is being currently tested on the NEES-UC San Diego shake table.
Jose. Restrepo is a Professor in Structural Engineering at the University of California, San Diego. Professor Restrepo research interests are in earthquake engineering and structural dynamics, with emphasis in structural design and experimental methods. Professor Restrepo was lead structural engineer for the NEES UC San Diego Large High-Performance Outdoor Shake Table, the largest in the United States and second largest worldwide. There he has leader or collaborator for a number of landmark experiments performed on this shake table. Prof. Restrepo’s research has been recognized with the ACI Chester Paul Siess Award, the PCI Charles C. Zollman and Martin Korn Awards, the FHWA James Cooper Award and the ASCE Alfred Noble Award.

Pacific Southwest Conference 2014 hosted by San Diego State University’s American Society of Civil Engineers
Dear EERI San Diego members and friends,
We are proud to announce San Diego State University’s student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) will be hosting the 2014 ASCE Pacific Southwest Conference (PSWC) from April 3rd to April 5th. A total of 19 ASCE student chapters, professional industry engineers, faculty advisors, and volunteers will be attending this exciting event.
Students will apply their civil engineering knowledge and team dynamics to the test by competing in a variety of activities such as Concrete Canoe, Steel Bridge, Surveying, Geotechnical, Quiz Bowl, and much more. At this year’s ASCE PSWC, our student chapter ranked 6th out of 17 schools. We are very excited to have another successful year on our very own campus!
Our goal is to make this conference the most memorable experience! As the host of the 2014 ASCE PSWC, we are responsible for planning, budgeting, and running the entire event. Our projected expense budget is $112,000. We are in need of raising $22,000 through sponsorships and fund raising events. Funds would be used for venues, catering, apparel, conference materials, printing/advertising, and making initial deposits. Enclosed is our sponsorship registration form. Your donation would help us achieve our financial goals.
San Diego State University’s student chapter is registered as a sub-group of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) San Diego Section. With the Fukushima disaster in Japan and the recent decision to shut down the San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant, there is strong interest in the community to better understand the seismic issues and risks of nuclear power plants. Motivated by these events and by our mission of raising awareness of earthquake risks, the EERI San Diego Chapter, working jointly with the ASCE Geo-Institute San Diego and the San Diego Association of Geologists, invite you to participate in a dinner meeting on Wednesday, September 25, 2013, 6pm at the Tom Ham’s Lighthouse Restaurant.
We are delighted to have Dr. Annie Kammerer, an earthquake engineer in the Office of Research of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, present on this topic. The abstract of her talk and her biographical information are provided below.
SEISMIC DESIGN AND RISK EVALUATION OF NUCLEAR PLANTS
Since the beginning of the nuclear power industry, the framework and methods used in the seismic design and risk evaluation of the fleet of nuclear power plants in the US has gone through significant change and advancement. Currently the US regulatory framework uses a risk-informed, performance-based framework that has matured over the last 5 decades and is composed of three steps: probabilistic seismic hazard analysis, seismic design, seismic probabilistic risk assessment.
This presentation will cover a wide variety of topics including:
- Basic nuclear plant design concepts (how they work and what can go wrong)
- Why the engineering of nuclear plants is unique and challenging
- The history of seismic regulations, design approaches, and reevaluation efforts
- The performance-based and risk-informed methods used in the industry today
- The impact of the Fukushima Daiichi accident, including current and future NRC efforts
Biography:
Dr. Annie Kammerer is a senior seismologist and earthquake engineer in the Office of Research of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, where she is the coordinator and manager of the seismic and tsunami research program. Her research is principally in the areas of seismic and tsunami hazard and risk assessments, seismic isolation, and technology-neutral approaches to seismic design. Currently she is also the NRC’s technical lead for a special program conducting Seismic Walkdowns of all 104 operating US nuclear plants in response to the Fukushima Daiichi accident. She is active internationally and chairs an IAEA Working Group on Seismic Re-evaluation of Operating Reactors, as well as special committee developing new guidance on seismic isolation. Prior to joining the NRC in 2006, she was a consultant in the Risk and Advanced Technology groups in the international design firm, Arup. As seismic hazard lead for the Americas, her consulting work encompassed a wide variety of technical areas including geotechnical earthquake engineering, structural dynamics, seismology and risk assessment. Her work focused principally in the energy, industrial and transportation sectors and included dozens of projects around the world. She holds three degrees from UC Berkeley, including a Ph.D. in geotechnical engineering with minors in strong motion seismology and structural engineering.
